Tip 1: Make sure to change out the furnace filter. If your furnace filter is dirty, it can severely hamper the efficiency of your heating unit. Heating up

Overheating is a common problem, especially throughout the South where temperatures can reach well into the 100s. Excessive exposure to these high temperatures can lead to different kinds of heat-related illnesses. Some, like heat exhaustion and heatstroke, are serious and can have long-lasting impacts on people.

Keeping cool

One of the most important things to do when it is hot outside is to hydrate, especially if you are going to be outside for an extended time or while doing strenuous activities. And don’t forget about your air conditioner. After a long, hard winter it needs some cleaning as well. Here are a few tips on how to get your AC ready for a long hot summer.

Change Your Filters

Thank goodness for air filters! They catch a lot of dust, hair, and debris that get sucked into your air. After a while, that debris can start to build up and cause numerous issues for both your unit as well as your health. The U.S. Department of Energy states that dirty filters can cause a lack of airflow and can affect how well your system works. In addition, that doesn’t stop all the dust and dirt from being stirred up and being put back in your air. Be sure to change your filter at least every 2 months. Clean Your House

This spring, make sure your cooling system is ready for the Texas heat! Learn how you can help prepare your HVAC system.

Indoors

Clean & Dust:

The warmer weather may make you more inclined to leave a door and/or window open, inviting in unfiltered air. Prevent dust and allergens accumulating in your air and on surfaces by sweeping, mopping, and dusting around your home regularly.

Change Air Filters:

Routinely changing your air filter will help ensures the air you are breathing is clean and helps your system to run more efficiently. Most replacement filters can be found at your local hardware store. Check for the model and size and pick one with a MERV rating of 7 or higher. Replacements should occur at least every 90 days but can be more frequent for those that suffer from allergies or have pets.

Clean Registers:

Check your vents and registers around your home. Make sure nothing is blocking the registers. Remove the vents, vacuum, and wash with water and mild soap.

Adjust Your Thermostat:

To prepare for the new season, adjust your programmable thermostat to a comfortable temperature. A programmable thermostat allows you to save, optimizes your system, and is more energy-efficient.

Inspect Window & Door Jams for Air Loss

Check for air leaks to save money, save energy, and keep the hot air out. Seal any cracks or holes and install weather stripping, if necessary.

Outdoors

Remove Debris:

During the winter months, debris such as leaves, twigs, and dirt, can build around your outdoor HVAC unit. It is important to clear away and cut down any nearby bushes. There should be 1-2 ft. clearance to allow for efficient airflow. Then, you will want to clean the unit with a vacuum brush. Make sure your unit of off during the cleaning.

While cleaning, it is a great time to see inspect for any apparent broken or misshaped pieces. Your HVAC technician can also look for these problems during planned maintenance.

Test:

Once all spring cleaning has been completed, test your system! Check to make sure the air is flowing appropriately, and the temperature is cooling to your preference. If you notice any problems call today.
