How Hot Is Too Hot for a Cockroach?
Roaches do best between roughly 77 and 88 degrees. Past that, the heat becomes unbearable for them. Research published in the Journal of Economic Entomology found that only 67 percent of German cockroach nymphs reached adulthood at 95 degrees, compared with roughly 90 percent at cooler temperatures. At 104 degrees, they didn't survive or develop at all.
That means a Tarrant County parking lot, a sun-baked slab, or a mulch bed at two in the afternoon becomes uninhabitable for the same insect that was living there comfortably in May. Those roaches relocate rather than die off, and your foundation is the nearest shade with water behind it.
Why a Heat Wave Also Means More of Them
Warmth speeds up the cockroach life cycle. Egg cases, called oothecae (hard capsules holding a dozen or more eggs), hatch faster in warm conditions, and nymphs reach breeding age sooner. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that cockroaches congregate near heat and moisture because both accelerate growth and reproduction.
A summer infestation compounds. The population you'd see build over a week in March shows up in a couple of days in August, which is why one sighting in June turns into a nightly problem by the end of July.
Where They Get in When the Yard Turns Hostile
Heat-driven roaches follow moisture, and most houses leak it in predictable places.
